Government Official Says MoD Investigating Security Risk from Vehicles from China, as Staff Advised to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Cars.

A defense official has revealed that the MoD is actively investigating the potential security risks associated with Chinese-made vehicles, and staff have been instructed to refrain from discussing classified information in all cars.

Security Guidance for Defence Personnel

During a recent interview on LBC, Luke Pollard commented on claims that MoD officials have been instructed not to talk about secret material while riding in China-made cars.

He explained that the MoD is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however emphasised that safety is a issue in all contemporary vehicles.

Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
However whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their car, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the increasing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for anyone concerned about safety.

When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using every cars from China, Pollard responded: That is precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”

Broader Security Background

The revelation follows reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable buses and bring disruption to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russian spy ship has been shining laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.

This broader security situation underscores the importance of robust protocols and caution in all areas of official operations, from vehicle usage to discussions habits.
