Larry Summers Steps Down from AI Company's Directors
One-time economic leader Larry Summers is leaving the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a series of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal the accused trafficker became widely known.
Summers remarked in an announcement that he was "thankful for the privilege to have served, enthusiastic about the potential of the organization, and anticipate tracking their progress".
Summers, who once presided over Harvard University, announced on Monday that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The newly public messages revealed that the economist exchanged messages with Epstein until the day before Epstein's 2019 arrest for accused sex trafficking of young people.
In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company stated it accepted his decision to resign.
"We appreciate his significant contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the directors," OpenAI remarked.
Legislative Background
This news comes after the two houses of the US legislature voted on this week to pass a bill that would require the US justice department to release its documents on the case.
The legislation will afterward head to the administration of President Trump for approval. He has said he expects to sign the measure, after reversing his view on the issue following pushback from his supporters.
Correspondence Findings
A batch of Epstein-related emails disclosed by the House Oversight Committee days ago referenced several high-profile figures in the Epstein's previous network, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.
The emails showed that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with the billionaire often seeking to connect the academic to influential global figures.
Personal Accountability
After the correspondence were shared with the general audience, the former official said he accepted "total ownership for my misguided judgment to maintain interacting with Mr Epstein".
He added that he desired "to rebuild faith and repair connections with the individuals most important to me".
Previous Positions
Summers held leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; functioning as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as leader of the economic advisory body under President Obama.
He led the university from the early 2000s and is still a academic there. When stating his departure from public commitments recently on Monday, he indicated he would continue his academic responsibilities.
Additional Consequences
Following his announcement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a progressive policy institute in Washington where Summers was a prominent member, confirmed that he was no longer associated with the institution.
The former official became part of the leadership of OpenAI, which develops ChatGPT, in last year - following a failed attempt to replace its CEO OpenAI's head.
