No less than 64 Dead in Rio de Janeiro's Most Extensive Law Enforcement Operation on Gangs
At least 64 people lost their lives in a police operation against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the area's past.
Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during Operation Containment in the Alemão and Penha districts, government representatives reported. In excess of 80 suspects were arrested.
Fierce clashes erupted when about 2,500 police forces moved in on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho responded with shooting, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, police representatives stated.
The UN Human Rights Office said it was "appalled" by the security action, demanding "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Community members have described the elevated neighborhood - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "battlefield" since the raid started.
Access ways continue shut across the area.
